The word mesothelioma is derived from the Greek word mesos, meaning 'at the
place of the heart'. For a long time, the lung was thought to be the primary
target of mesothelioma. However, this cancer is now increasingly found in many
other organs.
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer which is usually located near the chest or
abdominal area. The symptoms include pain and discomfort at the site of the
mesothelium, difficulty breathing and a feeling of discomfort, swelling and
heaviness around the affected areas.
There are several different causes for mesothelioma. These include exposure
to asbestos, exposure to diesel engine exhaust fumes, exposure to certain
chemicals and toxic fumes, which can be caused by inhalation or ingestion. It
is also thought that a major cause of mesothelioma is hereditary.
Early symptoms of mesothelioma may include pains and problems in the
abdomen and lungs. However, it is not uncommon for people to show up at an
early stage of the disease without ever showing any symptoms.
Symptoms can vary and there may be no symptoms at all in some people. It is
therefore important to visit your doctor as soon as possible if you notice any
signs or symptoms of mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affect both men and women and has
about a five year survival rate. In most cases, it is diagnosed in the later
stages, so you should try to get the disease diagnosed as soon as possible.
There are two types of treatment options for mesothelioma: surgical removal
and radiation therapy. When deciding which type of treatment to go with, it is
important to discuss your case with your doctor.
Surgery is the most common type of treatment for mesothelioma. This
involves removing part of the affected mesothelium, or damaging the affected
area so that there is no longer a risk of the cancer returning.
There are three different ways of doing this operation - using a small
incision, making the incision more extensive and removing the affected area
completely. Surgery for mesothelioma can be done either on an outpatient basis,
or on an inpatient basis, depending on the circumstances.
Radiation therapy is another way to remove mesothelioma tissue. This type
of treatment involves the use of radio-waves in order to destroy mesothelioma.
In terms of side effects, there are extreme risks involved with either of
these two treatments. The surgery is performed in the operating theatre, and
any complications can occur immediately following the operation.
Chemotherapy is used for cancer of the bowel and mouth. It is a successful
treatment for mesothelioma, but the treatment itself may cause side effects in
the body that are rarely, if ever, reported.
